Rusted Swings

This poem brought back some fond memories for me as I read it, and I think many can relate to the words. Sweet and yet sad, the poem has a wonderful ring to it.

Back then
In the humid days of summer
When time moved too fast
And we played too slow
When nights were spent
under the covers
And days were spent
under the sun.
Do you remember
when we would skip
to the tinkling chime of ice cream trucks?
When the most important decision we had
was chocolate or vanilla?
Do you remember
the first day we stepped
into the chilly waters of the public pool?
When we sported orange floaties
and waded in the shallows?
Do you remember
those hours spent
kicking our legs on the rusted swings?
When our aim
was to touch the sky?
I flip through old scrapbooks
full of antique memories.
I put my fingers
to the faded photos
sweeping off the film of dust.
I could tell intricate stories
of each picture.
From what day it was
to why we were there.
But if there was one thing I forgot
It was the feeling that those pictures harnessed
The emotion frozen in those simple moments
Back then.

Even the Stars Had Wings

Even though this was only an introductory piece, I found the imagery to be very vivid and easy to follow.

She was a quiet one. Her softened, pastel-like figure etched itself out among the clouds. Where she stood, Abi looked like a gargoyle. Stock-still, rigid and unmoving. Some said she wasn't right in the head; that somehow, Celeste must have dropped her egg or something trivial such as that. Though, the true reason she stood there at the highest points of Bala...? It brought her closer to her dreams.
As the wind whispered through each of her feathers, she imagined herself drifting over fantasy landscapes and through soft puffs of cloud and mist. But even if her heart was light enough to take flight, her wings were not. The joints stayed unmoving as the breezes caught them. They were paralyzed, and no one had an answer as to why. And after a while, that adds some weight to the heart too.
The sun dipped in the horizon and slowly evaporated into the crisp, chilling air of night. Frosty specks of light began dotting the sky. One particularly bright star seemed to explode into a spectacular, smoldering trail of light. A shooting star, they called it. The peach-colored casivian leaned forward slightly, squinted her sage eyes and could have sworn that two brilliant wings spread from the star's tail. Her expression dropped. Now, even the stars had wings.
